|What is the endocannabinoid system?
Did you know you have something called an "endocannabinoid system" in your body? It's true - it's been there this whole time.
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex signaling system in the body consisting of three main components - endocannabinoids, receptors and enzymes. While research is still ongoing, it's thought that the ECS plays a role in regulating a range of bodily functions including sleep and mood.
What are endocannabinoids? Phytocannabinoids? What do they do?
Endocannabinoids are compounds made by your body. They are similar to phytocannabinoids, compounds that come from the resin of cannabis flowers. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are the most well-known phytocannabinoids, but researchers have identified over 100 others. CBD is non-psychoactive while THC is the compound that gets you “high.”
It's thought that your body makes endocannabinoids as needed, and that they bond to receptors in your body to communicate that your endocannabinoid system (ECS) needs to take action or perform a function to support overall internal balance or wellbeing, but science is still very much ongoing.
Your body has two main endocannabinoid receptors:
- CB1 receptors - found mostly in the central nervous system
- CB2 receptors - found mostly in peripheral nervous system
Science suggests that endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids can act differently at the same receptor or bind to different receptors to produce varying effects or therapeutic benefits.
From here, enzymes help break down endocannabinoids once they've carried out their function. As an area of ongoing biomedical research, exactly how the ECS works and the role it plays in health and disease continues to expand.
What does Full Spectrum mean?
