What is CBD?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of many phytocannabinoids, compounds found in the hemp plant and its extracts. Cannabinoids, such as CBD, affect the body by binding to specific cell receptors. This system of receptors is part of a signalling system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). As our understanding of the ECS has expanded, many biological functions have been associated with the ECS. An important distinction between CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another well-known cannabinoid, is that CBD’s action on the ECS does not produce an intoxicating effect.
What is the difference between THC and CBD?
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is responsible for marijuana’s intoxicating effect and is only present in trace amounts (less than 0.3%) in hemp. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating phytocannabinoid abundant in hemp. These two phytocannabinoids act in different ways in the body, which causes different effects. For more details on how these phytocannabinoids act in the body, please see our section on Phytocannabinoids and the body.
